New Look 6110: Stepping it up!

I feel like I'm finally back in the sewing groove.  My machine is back, albeit temporarily, and I've been sewing up a storm!  I finished New Look 6110.  I made View C which is the shorter length top with the long sleeves.

Here it is!
I put my 6 year old budding photographer to work!

I used a busy printed cotton from my last great fabric purchase in India seen here:

For this top, I made an effort to 'step it up' or to go beyond the basics.  I thought that the busyness of the print would hide the details of the neckline so I bit the bullet and made my own piping and then added it around the neck band and at the sleeve bands.  This was my first attempt at making and using piping and I think it came out really well.  Check it out!

And at the cuff:

I hand basted the piping to the neckline before sewing the neck band top.  At the cuff, I realized it would be easier to baste the piping to the cuff rather than to the sleeve.  The trickiest part about adding the piping was at the bottom of the button placket for 2 reasons.  First, the bottom of the placket is sewn last, after the rest of the facing is attached so that you can lap the 2 sides, and second, because it wasn't easy to make a 90' angle with the piping.  It's not perfect at the bottom of the button placket but I love how it looks!  I'm so glad I decided to step it up and add the piping!

Here's the review:

Pattern Description:
Misses pull over top or tunic with banded neckline and sleeve variations, optional tie at waist.

I made View C (the narrower V-neckline with long sleeves.

Pattern Sizing:
10-22  I made a 12,  since there was a LOT of EASE!! (8.5").  My measurements suggested a 16--that would have been gigantic.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes.  However the drawing for step 19 where you sew the ends of the banded neckline together is not helpful.  I figured out what needed to be done, but the enlarged photo is useless.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked that it is a tunic style and the gathers along the neckline and sleeves make it more interesting than a basic tunic.

Fabric Used:  Cotton purchased in India

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I made my own piping and added it around the neck band and also at the sleeve cuffs.  The print on my fabric was pretty busy and I thought that adding piping would make the details of the shirt stand out.  I did a lot of hand basting to keep the piping in the right place and I'm happy with how it came out.

Would you sew it again?  Would you recommend it to others?  Yes and yes!

Conclusion:

I had no issues at with this top,  it came together very easily, it looks cute on, and I am so pleased with my first attempt at making and using piping.  I'm very happy with how this turned out.

  3. The piping detail really pops. It draws attention to the pretty neckline whilst allowing that cool print to shine. A great top.
