I'm just not that in to you, Butterick 5958

Dear Butterick 5958,

I wish I didn't have to do this, but it wouldn't be fair to you to keep our relationship going.  To be honest, I'm just not that in to you.  There I said it.  I wasn't immediately infatuated with you, but I liked you enough to give it a go.  The first two courses during our first date when I cut and sewed a muslin went along perfectly fine.  But when dessert rolled around and I tried that first muslin on, I knew things were taking a turn for the worse.  Not wanting to give up on you just yet, I agreed to a second date (muslin).

That second date/muslin was laborious and at times frustrating, and while it turned out ok, it left me exhausted.  I've had plenty of time to be with you during these past few snow days, but my heart wasn't in it, and I spent the time alone instead.  It was with a mixture of regret and relief that I folded up your pattern pieces and put them back in your envelope.  I regret that it didn't work out, and yet I was relieved that I could walk away.

I wish you the best in the future, please know that you won't leave my mind or my pattern stash, and maybe one day I will have the energy and enthusiasm for you that you deserve.

Meigan

  1. My sympathies! I've suffered through a few of those star-crossed pattern relationships myself. You are wise to walk out before popping the question (cutting into your fashion fabric). Thanks for the morning laugh!

  2. This is why we date/ muslin. Low risk. Minimal commitment. Kick it to the curb :)

    1. Minimal commitment is right! I didn't even use 'wearable muslin' fabric :)

  3. Awwww I'm so sad to hear your relationships with this jacket ended! I thought the pattern was adorable but unfortunately sometimes that doesn't translate to the actual garment :(

  5. *tear

I hate when relationships go bad.

I will say; I had a heck of a time with Butterick 5927 and I read several complaints about Butterick 5928. Perhaps Butterick + Jacket = FAIL.

    onward and upward!! :)

    1. There was only 1 review on PR for this pattern...I wonder if there have been other abandoned attempts at it like mine :)

  6. Don't you hate that? It's so frustrating when you try so hard and just can't quite get it to work out. Not to mention the money and time you spent...I stumbled across your blog this afternoon and love it! I am now your newest follower. I'm breaking for lunch, but will be back to read up on a few more posts. Have a great day!

  8. Dear Meigan,

I am so sorry that our time together has caused you so much grief. I, for one, have really enjoyed your dedication, hard work and attention. I will allow this, hopefully, brief separation to allow us both to think and come back fresh. Stronger heads will prevail! Thanks for not giving up on me completely.

    All my love,
    Butterick 5958

  9. I checked through Google images and you seem to be the only person in the world who even posted photos of a real person wrestling with this alligator. It seems it was designed for an older woman with sagging parts and a wide back...maybe that sounds like some relative you know, but you are young and could use a hipper style. Think about what attracted you to this pattern in the first place and decide if you want those features in another more "fitting" pattern when you find it....was it the collar...you can still swap it and use it. Asymmetrical closing...it can be swapped as well, it just is a center front with a couple extra inches wandering across to the next princess seam. Think about the parts...some we like, some are just not flattering. Glad you stopped messing with this one and can move on...as my granny used to say..."there's a lot more fish in the sea".

  10. Oof, I feel for you. It's hard to know when to persevere and when to move on to better things.
