Shaking My Head

I have been catching up on my blog reading and a clicking through Pinterest waiting for new fall TV shows to start.  Some things have come to light and just can't get my head around them.  I have compiled a preliminary list of "Things I don't get".

Things I don't get:

1.  The obsession with Mason Jars.  If you do a Pinterest search for Mason Jars, you will get a zillion pins of crafty uses.  You can paint them, cover them in glitter, mount them to a board and use them for storing your toothbrushes.  The list goes on and on.  Do you know what I use mason jars for?  Canning.  The end.

2.  The obsession with pallets

The wood is rough and full of nail holes (if you every get it apart).  They spend lots of time in warehouses, in the back of large trucks, or even outdoors.  Who knows what disgusting things, bugs, or animals they have been exposed to or what weather they have endured.  That wood is not anything I'd want inside of my home, even if the wood was smooth.

3.  Everyone's love for the Grainline Archer shirt.  It looks like every other button-down shirt.  I don't get it.  There aren't even any darts!

3.  Colette Laurel:  A shapeless shift dress.  Not worth the money.

4.  Jumpsuits/Rompers: They are onesies for grown-ups.  No way, for many many reasons.

Even with all of this head shaking, quite a bit of sewing has been completed and is in progress.  I have decided to participate in the Fall Essentials Sew-Along.  More on that later.

  1. I have to be honest, I didn't have the courage to say what you did about the archer shirt. I don't get it either. It's just a shirt. Ditto the Laurel and the t-shirts and all the other plain stuff that have been done a million times. I guess if you don't have a shift dress or shirt pattern then maybe you buy one, but to gush like it was the discovery of penicillin????

    1. Oh I forgot to mention all of the tee shirt patterns! You need one. That's it. And just because a pattern is free, doesn't mean it's good.

    2. Speaking of T shirt patterns, a free one I love is the Deer and Doe Plantain. Awesome fit!

But, uh, you only need one, so do what you will with this unsolicited comment. ;)

    3. Ha Ha Jess...I almost mentioned the Deer and Doe Plantain tee as being a little boring to be loved so much!

  2. When I was really thin, like a size 4, I thought a romper looked so cute on me. But, then I realized it was disgusting to go to the bathroom in a club with one. And, that I was dressing like my 3 year old niece. I also cosign on everything else.

    1. True, if you are the size of a child, you can wear the clothes of a child. I also need to pee every now and then and have no desire to completely undress to do so. :)

  3. Oh, my goodness, I agree completely with all of them. Pallets are everything you said and usually full of spider webs besides. Mostly on patterns there aren't many independent designs that you can't buy from the big 4 or make yourself. Thank you for this post! !

  4. Hahahahaha! Hilarious!

I use mason jars as: Change jars, to hold makeup brushes, to store zippers and buttons...and never for canning!
My husband is all SUPER intent on making some "pallet" furniture for the patio and I'm more O_o
I wouldn't buy the Archer (but I don't really buy many Indie patterns at all)...I don't do oversized/loose flowy tops (narrow shoulders, large bust, no defined waist = bad. bad. bad)
The Laurel ... Just browse the New Look catalog and get you a $4 Laurel...
    Love jumpsuits!

    1. I agree with Everything in your post. Actually you can get the New Look for $2.97 if you go to Walmart.

  6. Meigan, I could've written this post. Though, I do have some machine needles and pins stored in mason jars in my sewing room...they're the wide, squat kind.

I've eyed some romper/jumpsuit patterns, but I just can't bring myself to make them, because I'm not a 12 year old and I like to be able to pee without having to take all of my clothes off.

    1. Maybe 12 is too old. 6 year old?

  7. Totally agree! I don't think the Laurel even fits most people very well
